NEWS AND WHAT'S ON

m Barrking Times m

November 2009    Issue 28

m Dear members,

Last year our annual raffle raised an amazing total of £1861.00. Mathew Desmond raised £510.00 by selling raffle tickets for us and for the second year running the amount he raised was matched by Diageo, so thank you very much for their continued support. This year we want to increase the amount raised to help meet the ever increasing expense BARRK incurs. Please help us give our BARRK dogs the Christmas they deserve by selling the enclosed raffle tickets on our behalf and returning the stubs and any monies raised to the BARRK Shop, 3 Low Street, Banff AB45 1AU.
From the tickets you will see that people have been very generous in donating prizes and we would like to thank each and every one of them for their kind generosity.
If you would like more tickets to sell please telephone 01542 835333 leaving your name, address and telephone number and the quantity of books you require and we will post them out to you. The amount raised will be announced in the May 2010 issue along with the names of the main prize winners. Good Luck, let’s make this the best raffle ever.

In the last issue of Barrking Times we appealed for foster carers to take care of our dogs like Tara that require that little bit extra love and attention. Barrk has been fortunate over the years with the quality and quantity of foster carers who have volunteered their services. At present we are still desperately seeking foster carers for our long-term foster dogs.  A long-term foster dog can be young or old, small or large, male or female, the one thing they do have in common is they require that little bit extra care. That is why these dogs are homed on a long-term foster basis which means a person who has volunteered to take on one of these dogs will generally look after it for the rest of its days along with support from BARRK. This support can be in the form of advice, financial assistance or the provision of their dietary requirements.Anyone who is looking for a dog, whether it is for a companion for themselves or for their own dog and has the time to give that little bit extra care involved please give long – term fostering some thought as these dogs make  excellent pets. Please call BARRK, we will be happy to answer any of your questions and there will be a dog that needs you.

IT'S YOUR LETTERS

Dear Barrk,

We are sending you a cheque for £200.00 on behalf of a very nice man, whose name is ERNIE SKIPPER Esq. He works at Inverness Airport with Les (Newman).
He wanted to raise money for a worthwhile charity and we know what a wonderful job you do.
He cycled over 70 miles from Inverness to Fort William over the hills, on what was probably the worst days (weather wise) of the year. It took him 17 hours. He raised £400.00 – half for you and half for a children’s charity.
Yours sincerely
Christine Newman

P.S. I enclose a photo Kip & Syd.

This is me (Kip) & my new brother Syd in the background. My mum & dad say we are the best dogs in the world. I am having a great time and being very, very good. We get to go on lots of long walks. I am very happy and get lots of cuddles too.

www.BARRK.CO.UK
The website continues to get new hits every week and is proving to be a great success if you would like to contribute to it please email us your BARRK dog photos or letters to the above address. It is now updated regularly and contains some photographs and information on dogs that have been successfully rehomed. We are unable to show all dogs requiring a home, as some dogs can go from their present home to their new home in a matter of hours, we will show special dogs that may need a little more care. We often receive donations that turn out to be of some value, often antiques, which we now auctioned off on a charity website. This helps to generate more money than being sold in the shop or on our stall. If you have something you think maybe of value and would like to donate it please send an email with a brief description along with your contact details to the above address or give us a call and someone will be in touch.

SHOP TALK

The volunteers who run the shop have continued to amaze us with fantastic sales figures despite the credit crunch. We can only put this down to a lot of hard work by the volunteers and incredible support from the public. The shop is always full of goodies from books to bric-a- brac and shoes to clothes, there is something for everyone. The BARRK shop is our main source of income. The ladies who volunteer to run the shop are such a wonderful asset to the charity and we would like to thank them for all their hard work and wish them a Merry Christmas. We are in the process of obtaining the appropriate planning permissions for erecting a new sign for the BARRK shop as the old one is looking tired. As the shop is in a conservation area we have to have the sign approved and this will take time. As soon as the sign is approved we will have the new one in place as soon as possible.

TARA'S STORY

Hi everyone, I am Tara and I am approximately 12 years young. My owner was unable to care for me so I had to find new accommodation. I knew my options were limited as my eyes, ears and legs were starting to fail and I was on medication for the rest of my days. My only hope was that someone would fall for my super model looks and wonderful stubborn personality. I am not a fussy eater and I will help to eat anyone’s food for them. Lucky for me BARRK came to my rescue. I have met several members of your wonderful organization who all gave up their time to assist in making my move to my retirement home as enjoyable as possible. My future is now secure as I am officially a BARRK long –term foster dog. I now reside at Victoria’s Hotel for Dogs. The service is almost first class, but she refuses to allow me to assist in devouring the other guests dinner. Once she realizes the kindness of this gesture everything will be perfect. I would like to thank every BARRK member for paying for my food and medication and letting me enjoy my retirement years.

With Christmas fast approaching and the dark nights drawing in it is very easy to curl up on the sofa in a cosy room and make excuses for not walking our dogs. “Its cold and wet, the roads are muddy, I’ll give him a big walk tomorrow as it is starting to get dark. So it is important to remind ourselves why we should be walking our dogs. Dogs exercise needs vary according to the breed that you have but every dog should have at least one walk a day, often two. Walking your dog is essential for its long term health and fitness - keeping the muscles strong and supple and ensuring that it does not become overweight. With over one third of our pets estimated to be overweight due to a result of their owner’s sedentary lifestyle. Many behavioral problems found in dogs are due to lack of exercise and mental stimulation. Walking your dog can be an activity for all the family a chance for every one to enjoy the great outdoors while keeping fit and better still it does not cost anything. Please remember you are obliged by law to ensure your dog wears a collar and an identification tag. Always remember to clean up after your dog to avoid a considerable fine. So do not wait till New Year to start your new fitness campaign. Wrap up warm and show your dog how much you really love him by taking him for a walk.
